Will AI agents replace investment bankers? Who knows?

Maybe one day “they” will pitch investors, negotiate waterfalls, and explain to a family office why valuing a Series B at 5X revenue makes sense.

But for now? Not even close.

*** Will a CEO let a computer choose his financial partner? Hard no. The company is her dream. Baby. Obsession. This may be the most important decision she ever makes.

– Raising capital is about human psychology, trust, and timing

– AI can’t sense the pause before an investor says “we’ll think about it”

– It can’t read the tension in a boardroom when a strategy lands wrong, or feel the energy shift when a founder earns an investor’s respect, or know when “let’s stay in touch” actually means “not a chance”

*** Will an investor let a computer make his decisions? Harder no. It can’t smell tenacity, or detect overconfidence, or see through BS.

– PE investing is messy – incomplete information, opaque motivations, fraud, conflicting incentives, and fragile egos

– That’s not data science; that’s human science

– Only people can decide who to trust with their money

Of course, we already use AI to enhance our process: by mapping investor criteria, analyzing prior allocations, and flagging hidden target investors.

AI shines in the data. Investor criteria, deal patterns, historical preferences, and behavioral signals. Pinpointing which investors are a good fit… before you make the first call.

But the final decision? Always human.

So no, AI won’t replace investment bankers any time soon. But it will improve what matters most – judgment, relationships, and trust.
